Genecia Luo

Former Miss Singapore International, Genecia Luo, trains for pageants like it’s the World Cup and shares her grand plan to give back to the industry—but didn't say anything about world peace.

IT’S COMFORTING TO KNOW THAT DESPITE the blaring vehicular and human traffic around the City Hall area, there are still urban retreats where you can escape from the hustle and bustle. Take the corner of Beach Road and Seah Street for example, where Naumi Hotel, Singapore’s first luxury boutique business hotel, nestles.

It’s here that we met 25 year-old Genecia Luo, former Miss Singapore International (MSI) ’06 and founder of InQueenz, a training school dedicated to preparing women to become queens on the stage, and life. Sitting comfortably (a little too comfortably) in one of Naumi Hotel’s uber-luxurious suite, we find out Genecia’s been involved in the pageant world for the last five years, since taking part in The New Paper New Face competition in 2003. Despite professing to be a tomboy in her younger days, the former occupational therapist overcame her initial awkwardness of posing and preening (“I almost peed!”) to carve out an impressive track record which includes her Miss Singapore International crown, Second runner-up at Miss Singapore Universe (MSU) ’06, and ambassador roles for the National Library Board’s Speak Mandarin and Health Promotion Board’s Healthy Lifestyle campaigns. We even dug up a National Schools Wushu Long Fist trophy from her past!

She seemed to have found her calling in coaching, however, since competing in MSU. Quickly realising the lack of comprehensive training that pageants generally offered, Genecia’s taken the responsibility to do her part for the industry and give local women a chance to “unleash their inner queen” whether it’s for competition or not. At a time when so many pageants are sprouting at all levels, Genecia regards the increased number positively because “it creates the hype for the competitions and also awareness.” She speaks passionately about her experience on the domestic and international stage, and while detailing her preparations for the pageants, we realised being a beauty queen is more than just skin deep.
